When some wolves surrounded a band of wild horses in Alberta, Canada, the horses seemed to have one goal: protect the foal. A trail cam caught the wild horse vs. wolf showdown on video, providing a rare glimpse at an interaction we wouldn’t otherwise be able to see.
The Help Alberta Wildies Society posted its trail-cam video, which is from a couple of summers ago, to its Facebook page, saying: “A lot of people ask us if the Stallion would try to protect [his] foal from wolves. This short video will give you an idea of what that might look like.”
In the footage, you can see multiple wolves trying to get at the foal, but the stallion and the other horses always block the predators’ access to the young animal. The wolves, when working as a group, can take down wild horses (especially young, old, or injured ones), but in this case, with so many horses working toward the same goal, the wolves likely left without lunch.
