Trail Cam Spots Mysterious Canine. Is It an Elusive ‘Woyote Dog’?

The Voyageurs Wolf Project operates trail cameras in the greater Voyageurs National Park area of northern Minnesota, and the nonprofit organization often shares its footage on social media platforms to educate, inspire, and, occasionally, stir up some controversy. A mysterious canine crossed paths with one of the organization’s trail cameras last winter, and Voyageurs Wolf Project is now asking the internet to help identify it. Could this animal be an elusive “woyote dog”?

“To us, the animal looks ‘coyote-esque’ but has some dog-like aspects to its appearance (especially its ears), and possibly some wolf-like characteristics (e.g., robust snout, a bit bigger body than coyotes in our area . . . but these are attributes from some dogs as well),” writes the Voyageurs Wolf Project in its Instagram post sharing the trail-cam footage. “Perhaps it is the elusive ‘woyote dog’—a rare hybrid of all 3 canids!?!?”

Of course, that’s a made-up animal, and Voyageurs Wolf Project’s next line reads: “That’s a joke, of course.”

People online have mixed opinions. Some say coyote, some say wolf, and some agree with the experts and say it’s a hybrid of some sort.
